"A Day Off From War" by Jon Shepherd
If I close my eyes,
It almost feels like home.
Though we’re hungry and tired
This Christmas day has shown.
The quiet of the guns is as sweet
As Christmas bells, and I’m sure
A miracle’s happened,
We’ve got the day off from war.
And maybe if we sing in harmony They’ll hear us.
And maybe they’ll realise
Where we’ve all gone wrong.
And maybe if we
Laugh out loud together-
Then we’ll all get to go home.
And this day from war
Will continue for oh so long.
Now, when I look around me
I see the milling throng,
And they all look so happy
So surely this can’t be wrong?
There are enemies huddled for warmth,
Out there on the killing floor.
In this time of darkness,
We’ve earned the day off from war
And maybe if we sing in harmony They’ll hear us.
And maybe they’ll realise
Where we’ve all gone wrong.
And maybe if we
Laugh out loud together-
Then we’ll all get to go home.
And this day from war
Will continue for oh so long.
Someone said it was Christmas time,
For peace and love and goodwill.
Someone said:
It seemed stupid to fight,
We weren’t put on this Earth to kill.
And maybe if we sing in harmony They’ll hear us.
And maybe they’ll realise
Where we’ve all gone wrong.
And maybe if we
Laugh out loud together-
Then we’ll all get to go home.
And this day from war
Will continue for oh so long. (repeat)
